The song In-Naħla u Sħabha (L-Għanja tal-Ispeċi Nazzjonali), which translates to The Bee and Her Friends (The Song of the National Species), is set for release on 24th September 2025. It is the final instalment in a trio of educational songs aimed at promoting environmental awareness and Maltese cultural identity through music. This release holds particular significance, as it marks the first anniversary of the Maltese Honey Bee’s official recognition as Malta’s National Insect—an initiative spearheaded by our Foundation.
Written and composed by Michael Piscopo, with educational guidance by Professor Suzanne Piscopo, and performed by Claire Marie Busuttil, the song is specifically designed for children aged 5 to 8, making it an ideal resource for early primary school education.
An Introduction to Malta’s Six National Species
While the first song introduces children to the Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), In-Naħla u Sħabha widens the scope to include the five other national species of Malta. Through Katerina the Bee’s playful narration, young listeners are guided through the natural world of the Maltese Islands, meeting:
- The Mediterranean Killifish (Aphanius fasciatus) – il-Bużaqq
- The Blue Rock-Thrush (Monticola solitarius) – il-Merill
- The Maltese Rock-Centaury (Cheirolophus crassifolius) – Widnet il-Baħar
- The Maltese Freshwater Crab (Potamon fluviatile lanfrancoi) – il-Qabru
- The Sandarac Gum Tree (Tetraclinis articulata) – is-Siġra tal-Għargħar
Each verse highlights where these species are found, what they do, and how they contribute to Malta’s rich biodiversity. With lyrics that are as informative as they are imaginative, the song helps children visualise and appreciate these unique species in their natural settings.

A Joyful and Pedagogically Sound Resource
The song’s content has been carefully crafted to ensure it is pedagogically sound, developmentally appropriate, and engaging for young learners. The lyrics convey simple yet meaningful messages about environmental care, such as:
“Nieħdu ħsieb l-ambjent, fejn immorru ma nħammġux.”
(“Let us care for the environment; wherever we go, let us not litter.”)
Additionally, the song encourages respect for nature and highlights the importance of protecting local wildlife, trees, and habitats, fostering a sense of stewardship and responsibility towards the natural world in children.
Language Learning Through Song
In-Naħla u Sħabha continues the series’ focus on promoting language development through music. Designed for early primary school learners, the song introduces a blend of familiar and new Maltese vocabulary, particularly names of animals, plants, and natural features.
Singing helps improve pronunciation, memory retention, and comprehension, making it an ideal tool for both native speakers and children learning Maltese as a second language. The structure of the song reinforces learning, using repetition and rhythm to help children internalise new concepts in a joyful, memorable way.
Bringing the Story to Life Visually
The song will be accompanied by a visually rich slideshow video, also produced by Michael Piscopo, featuring colourful, illustrations of each national species and their natural habitats. From the flutter of the bee’s wings above Widnet il-Baħar to the song of il-Merill on rocky cliffs, the video will help children connect visually with what they hear, reinforcing their understanding and keeping them engaged.
These vibrant visuals are particularly helpful for visual learners and younger children, allowing teachers and parents to further discuss what is shown on screen and encourage children to ask questions and share their observations.
More Than a Song: A Celebration of National Identity and Nature
In-Naħla u Sħabha is more than just a catchy tune—it is a celebration of Malta’s natural identity, and a valuable tool for education, awareness, and pride. It supports educators and caregivers in teaching children about biodiversity, sustainability, and language in an accessible, enjoyable way.
As we mark the anniversary of the Maltese Honey Bee’s national recognition, this song reminds us that each species has its role, and that every child has the power to protect the natural world.
On 24th September 2025, let’s sing in celebration of Katerina, her friends, and all that makes the Maltese Islands a treasure trove of nature and heritage.
This project is being coordinated by the founders, Dylan Farrugia and Abner Joe Buttigieg.
IN-NAĦLA U SĦABHA
Daħla mitkellma: Kontu tafu li n-Naħla Maltija hija l-insett nazzjonali ta’ pajjiżna?
In-Naħla Katerina
Tassew insett speċjali
Għaliex flimkien ma’ sħabha
Hija speċi nazzjonali…
F’Malta u Għawdex għandna
Xi annimali u pjanti
Li għall-ġid tal-pajjiż
Huma ferm importanti
Isebbħu lill-ambjent
Iwieżnu lin-natura
Biss għandhom bżonn li lkoll kemm aħna
Tagħhom nieħdu kura
Dawn huma ħlejjaq verament speċjali
Magħrufa bħala Speċi Nazzjonali
In-NAĦLA KATERINA tittajjar fuq il-fjur
Ta’ WIDNET IL-BAĦAR mal-irdum
Fejn tisma’ l-MERILL li bl-hena qalbu tfur
Ikanta filgħodu malli jqum
Il-QABRU joħroġ rasu minn ġo xaqq
U bi tbissima jsellem lill-BUŻAQQ
U s-SIĠRA TAL-GĦARGĦAR li tħaddar fil-widien
Tfakkarna fis-sbuħija tal-ħolqien
Nieħdu ħsieb l-ambjent
Fejn immorru ma nħammġux
Il-kampanja nħarsu
L-iskart barra ma narmux
Siġar ma neqirdu qatt
U nħawlu oħrajn ġodda
Għax hemm l-għasafar jagħmlu bejta
Li għalihom sodda.
Inħarsu l-pjanti u l-ħlejjaq lokali
U speċjalment l-Ispeċi Nazzjonali
In-NAĦLA KATERINA tittajjar fuq il-fjur
Ta’ WIDNET IL-BAĦAR mal-irdum
Fejn tisma’ l-MERILL li bl-hena qalbu tfur
Ikanta filgħodu malli jqum
Il-QABRU joħroġ rasu minn ġo xaqq
U bi tbissima jsellem lill-BUŻAQQ
U s-SIĠRA TAL-GĦARGĦAR li tħaddar fil-widien
Tfakkarna fis-sbuħija tal-ħolqien
Viva l-kampanja
U kulma jgħix ġo fiha.
Jekk tieħu ħsiebha
Għall-ġejjien
Tibqa’ tgawdiha
In-NAĦLA KATERINA tittajjar fuq il-fjur
Ta’ WIDNET IL-BAĦAR mal-irdum
Fejn tisma’ l-MERILL li bl-hena qalbu tfur
Ikanta filgħodu malli jqum
Il-QABRU joħroġ rasu minn ġo xaqq
U bi tbissima jsellem lill-BUŻAQQ
U s-SIĠRA TAL-GĦARGĦAR li tħaddar fil-widien

THE BEE AND HER FRIENDS
Spoken Introduction: Did you know that the Maltese Honey Bee is the national insect of our country?
Katerina the Bee
Indeed, a special insect
Because, together with her friends
She is a national species…
In Malta and Gozo, we have
Some animals and plants
That, for the good of the country
Are very important
They beautify the environment
They nourish nature
But they need us all
To take care of them
These are truly special creatures
Known as National Species
In-NAĦLA KATERINA flies over the flowers
Of the WIDNET IL-BAĦAR by the cliffs
Where you hear the MERILL, whose heart fills with joy
Singing in the morning as soon as it awakes
The QABRU sticks its head out of a hole
And with a smile greets the BUŻAQQ
And the SIĠRA TAL-GĦARGĦAR, which flourishes in the valleys
Reminds us of the beauty of creation
We take care of the environment
Wherever we go, we do not litter
The countryside we protect
We do not throw waste outside
We never destroy trees
And we plant new ones
Because there, the birds make their nests
Which for them are beds
We protect the plants and the local creatures
And especially the National Species
(Chorus)
Long live the countryside
And all that lives within it
If you take care of it
For the future
You will continue to enjoy it
(Chorus)
The QABRU sticks its head out of a hole
And with a smile greets the BUŻAQQ
And the SIĠRA TAL-GĦARGĦAR, which flourishes in the valleys
Reminds us of the beauty of creation
It reminds us of the beauty of creation
