The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is proud to announce that it has won the Associations Category at the 13th Malta Waste Reduction Awards. The ceremony, held on 22 April 2026 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Malta in Qawra, recognised outstanding initiatives contributing to sustainable waste management and environmental protection. Finalists were selected by a panel of independent experts, who evaluated submissions based on their environmental impact, innovation, and potential for community engagement.
Organised annually by WasteServ Malta, the awards celebrate the most impactful initiatives carried out as part of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR). These initiatives highlight practical actions that promote waste reduction through the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, while raising awareness and encouraging behavioural change within communities.
This achievement was attained through our project Beescape@UM, which was successfully awarded funding under Bank of Valletta’s Rebbiegħa 2024 CSR initiative. As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) 2025, this project addressed the growing environmental challenge of invasive alien species in Malta, which threaten native biodiversity and disrupt fragile ecosystems.
Beescape@UM is also a research-driven and community-focused initiative. In collaboration with the University of Malta’s Department of Biology, the bee hotels will be monitored to study pollinator activity and nesting behaviour, contributing to ongoing ecological research and citizen science. This project was also supported by Project Green through the provision of materials.
This achievement marks an important milestone for the Foundation, reinforcing its role in promoting environmental stewardship, sustainable resource use, and community participation. It also reflects the growing importance of innovative, local solutions in addressing global environmental challenges. Through its continued efforts, the Foundation remains committed to inspiring individuals and communities, particularly younger generations, to take an active role in protecting the environment and supporting Malta’s biodiversity.
