The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee was recently invited to participate in a series of media events to showcase its ongoing work, while also taking the opportunity to introduce its much-loved mascot, Katerina.
These appearances included a television interview on Illum ma’ Steph, broadcasted on the 13th of April 2026 on the national station TVM and hosted by Stephanie Spiteri, as well as a radio interview on Sagħtar FM (RTK103) aired on the 15th of April with presenter Kevin Mercieca.
During both interviews, the Foundation highlighted a major project carried out over last year. This initiative was supported by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) and facilitated by the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector. Through this funding, the Foundation produced three educational songs in Maltese:
These songs were specifically created to raise awareness about the Maltese honey bee, pollinators, and Malta’s rich natural heritage, including its flora and fauna. While introducing also the Foundation‘s mascot Katerina, special emphasis was placed on the Maltese honey bee itself, which holds the distinction of being the National Insect.
A key part of the Foundation’s outreach is its mascot, Katerina, who plays an important role in engaging children during educational activities and events. Through her cheerful and interactive presence, Katerina helps bring environmental appreciation and conservation messages to life in a fun and memorable way.

The Foundation also spoke about its ongoing collaboration with Sagħtar magazine. Two articles have already been published in the November and February issues, with two more scheduled for the April and May editions.
Looking ahead, the Foundation shared exciting plans for a new project funded once again by MCVS. This initiative will result in a series of children’s books aimed at readers aged 7–8. The books will be authored by established writers Leanne Ellul and Clare Azzopardi, and illustrated by Sarah Pisani, promising both high-quality storytelling and engaging visuals.
In addition, a range of themed educational and promotional materials was featured during the interviews. These included postcards, honey packaged in Katerina-themed designs, and special keychains equipped with NFT chips; an innovative way to connect environmental awareness with modern technology!
Through these media appearances, the Foundation continues to strengthen its mission: educating the public, especially younger generations, about the importance of protecting the Maltese honey bee and the wider fragile Maltese biodiversity around us.
