The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is delighted to announce that an adaptation of its educational video Insett Uniku: In-Naħla Maltija was recently featured in the national Year 5 Maltese listening examination.
As part of the assessment, primary school students were shown an adapted version of the video and were then required to answer a series of questions based on the information presented. The inclusion of the Maltese Honey Bee in a national examination marks an important milestone in raising awareness about one of Malta’s most unique and valuable species among young learners.
The adapted video introduced students to the Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), explaining that it is an endemic subspecies found only in the Maltese Islands and nowhere else in the world. Students learned about the important role that the bee plays in Malta’s ecosystem through pollination, helping to ensure the production of fruits and vegetables that form part of our daily diet.
The presentation also highlighted some of the challenges facing the Maltese Honey Bee today. Over the years, the importation of foreign honey bee subspecies led to interbreeding, causing the Maltese Honey Bee to lose many of its distinctive characteristics. This process weakened colonies, increased their vulnerability to disease, and altered the bee’s traditional dark appearance.
In addition, the students learned about the efforts undertaken in recent years to secure greater recognition and protection for the Maltese Honey Bee. The video explained how initiatives aimed at increasing public awareness have contributed to the conservation of this important part of Malta’s natural heritage.
The Foundation welcomes the decision to include this educational content in a national examination. By introducing children to the importance of biodiversity and pollinator conservation at an early age, schools play a vital role in fostering environmental awareness and encouraging future generations to value and protect Malta’s unique wildlife.
