Oriental Hornet Traps Now Available for Purchase

As part of its ongoing efforts to address the growing challenges posed by the Oriental Hornet (Vespa orientalis) in Malta and Gozo, the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is making purpose-built Oriental Hornet trap cages available for purchase.

The significant increase in the Oriental Hornet population is not a concern for beekeepers and the Maltese Honey Bee alone. Its growing presence is an issue that can affect the wider community and requires a collective response if we are to make a meaningful impact.

For this reason, we encourage everyone, not only beekeepers, to consider obtaining a trap and contributing to the collective effort to capture as many Oriental Hornets as possible. The wider the participation, the greater the potential impact in helping to reduce the pressure caused by the species across Malta and Gozo.

These traps are particularly suitable for placement in gardens, on rooftops and balconies, and in suitable public spaces, allowing people from different parts of Malta and Gozo to contribute to this collective effort. The trap cages being offered by the Foundation are designed specifically for the capture of Oriental Hornets and have already been used successfully in practice.

Trap Prices

Those interested in purchasing a trap are kindly requested to complete the relevant form below, and we will get back to you with further details.

Addressing the Oriental Hornet problem cannot depend on the efforts of a small number of individuals. It requires broad participation and a collective effort to make a meaningful difference. By working together and placing traps across different localities, we can help reduce Oriental Hornet pressure and contribute towards protecting our communities, Malta’s beekeeping sector and the Maltese Honey Bee.
