The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee (KNM Foundation) is pleased to announce the publication of the fourth story in the Id-Djarju ta’ Katerina (Katerina’s Diary) series, featured in the May 2026 issue of Sagħtar magazine (Issue 402), on page 34.
Entitled Kif Katerina saret l-Insett Nazzjonali ta’ Malta (How Katerina Became Malta’s National Insect), the story continues the educational adventures of Katerina, the Maltese Honey Bee. Written by Abner Joe Buttigieg and Dylan Farrugia, co-founders and administrators of the KNM Foundation, the story introduces young readers to the importance of the Maltese Honey Bee and the reasons why it was recognised as Malta’s National Insect.
In this new diary entry, dated 24th April 2026, Katerina recalls the remarkable events that led to her receiving one of Malta’s most prestigious national titles. She explains how a group of “Brave People” recognised the value of the Maltese Honey Bee and proposed that it should be honoured as the National Insect of Malta. Katerina is delighted by the news, not only because of the recognition she receives, but because it also highlights the important role that bees and other pollinators play in supporting nature and food production.
However, the story soon introduces a humorous challenge. A jealous and mischievous mouse becomes determined to prevent Katerina and the Maltese Honey Bee from receiving the title. Through a series of exaggerated claims and false rumours, the mouse attempts to turn public opinion against the bees and convince everyone that he deserves the honour instead.
As the day of the official ceremony approaches, Katerina and her supporters realise that the mouse plans to disrupt the celebration. Working together, they devise a clever plan that makes use of the mouse’s greatest weakness, his love of food. What follows is a light-hearted and entertaining adventure that teaches children the value of intelligence, teamwork and perseverance in overcoming obstacles.
Through imaginative storytelling, humour and child-friendly language, the story introduces readers to themes such as national heritage, the importance of pollinators, honesty, critical thinking and the dangers of believing misinformation. At the same time, it promotes values of cooperation, determination, forgiveness and respect for nature.
The story also helps children learn about the Maltese Honey Bee, Apis mellifera ruttneri, Malta’s endemic honey bee subspecies, and the important ecological role it plays in maintaining biodiversity and pollinating both wild and cultivated plants across the Maltese Islands.
Readers can find the story in the May 2026 issue of Sagħtar magazine (Issue 402) and continue following Katerina’s educational and inspiring adventures as she discovers more about Malta’s natural heritage, wildlife and environment.
