KATERINA is the children’s mascot for the Maltese Honey Bee, Apis mellifera ruttneri, which is recognised as Malta’s national insect. These educational resources were specially created for children in kindergarten and early primary school to help introduce the importance of bees, pollination, and nature in a fun and engaging way. Through storytelling, music, and interactive activities, children are encouraged to appreciate biodiversity and develop a love for the natural environment from an early age.
As part of the initiative, a trilogy of educational songs was produced in both English and Maltese to support learning through music and participation. Together with the accompanying resources, the project promotes awareness about the Maltese Honey Bee and the important role pollinators play in our ecosystems. The songs and videos can be viewed on YouTube, where children, educators, and families can continue discovering and enjoying Malta’s unique honey bee in a creative and educational way.
