On Sunday, 25th October 2026, the Foundation celebrated the successful completion of the sixth edition of its flagship course, ‘Introduction to Beekeeping and Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee’. Despite the many challenges currently facing the local beekeeping sector, the Foundation remains committed to nurturing a new generation of informed, responsible and conservation-minded beekeepers through education, awareness and conservation.

Over ten sessions, participants completed 20 hours of training combining practical beekeeping with the conservation of Apis mellifera ruttneri, the endemic Maltese Honey Bee and Malta’s National Insect. As the only course in Malta to integrate beekeeping with biodiversity conservation, it equips participants not only with the skills needed to manage healthy colonies but also with an understanding of the environmental threats facing this unique subspecies, including hybridisation, pesticide exposure and climate change.

A key component of the programme is the hands-on learning. Through practical apiary sessions, participants gained valuable experience in hive management, identifying brood and food stores, recognising signs of disease, and adopting sustainable beekeeping practices.

Upon successful completion, participants received their certificates, and were encouraged to become members of the Foundation, opening the door to further opportunities to actively contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of the Maltese Honey Bee, while joining a growing community committed to responsible beekeeping and safeguarding Malta’s natural heritage!
Keep following the Foundation for updates on upcoming courses, workshops and conservation initiatives. Your continued support helps us safeguard the future of the Maltese Honey Bee!
