Katerina the Honey Bee Inspires New Interactive Learning Pages in Sagħtarin

Following the success of her appearances in Sagħtar, Katerina the Honey Bee has now made her debut in Sagħtarin, marking an important new step in the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee’s (KNM Foundation) ongoing educational outreach.

Sagħtarin is the early years educational publication produced by the Sagħtar Foundation. It is designed specifically for children in the early primary years, offering a playful and engaging introduction to learning through illustrated activities, simple texts, games, colouring exercises, and foundational literacy tasks. The publication supports classroom learning by helping children develop essential skills while keeping the experience enjoyable and accessible.

Building on the positive reception of the Id-Djarju ta’ Katerina series in Sagħtar, Katerina’s transition into Sagħtarin reflects a natural progression in the educational journey being developed by the KNM Foundation. While Sagħtar introduces slightly older primary school readers to environmental themes and storytelling, Sagħtarin brings these ideas closer to early learners through simplified, interactive formats.

The inclusion of Katerina in Sagħtarin also strengthens the continuity between the Foundation’s educational resources, ensuring that children can encounter the Maltese Honey Bee throughout different stages of their learning journey. From songs and storytelling to magazine features and now early years activity-based learning, Katerina continues to serve as a central character in promoting environmental awareness among children.

The KNM Foundation has emphasised that this development supports its wider mission of fostering appreciation for Malta’s natural heritage from an early age, particularly focusing on the Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri) and its essential role within local ecosystems.

The latest issue of Sagħtarin featuring Katerina is now being distributed in schools, offering educators an additional resource to support early childhood learning through nature-based themes and interactive engagement.
