In a pioneering collaboration, the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee and Is-Suq tal-Belt are announcing the forthcoming launch of a unique Premium Maltese Honey product that will not only highlight the rich heritage of Malta’s endemic species but also play a vital role in its conservation. This innovative initiative, set to be launched later this year, aims to help tackle the critical issue of hybridisation between the Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri) and imported foreign honey bee subspecies, a growing concern that threatens to dilute the genetics of the local honey bee population and push it towards extinction.
The idea behind this initiative was born from the shared concern of the Foundation and Is-Suq tal-Belt for the future of the Maltese Honey Bee. Despite its status as Malta’s National Insect, it is facing a serious threat due to the importation of foreign honey bees that are hybridising with the local Maltese Bee, diluting its genetic purity. Without any legal restrictions in place to prevent the importation of foreign honey bee colonies, the survival of this endemic subspecies is at risk. To fight this, the Foundation and Is-Suq tal-Belt devised a way to offer financial incentives to local beekeepers who focus on rearing the Maltese Honey Bee exclusively.
The solution is a premium honey product that is sourced entirely from flora in Malta and produced exclusively by the Maltese Honey Bee. This will be the first honey in Malta with restrictions similar to a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) certification, ensuring that it comes solely from the endemic bee subspecies and the unique environment of Malta. By offering a better price to beekeepers who rear the Maltese Honey Bee, the project aims to create a financial incentive for them to stop importing foreign bees, ultimately ensuring the survival of this vital pollinator species for future generations.
“Sourced from the rich flora of Malta and produced by the Maltese Honey Bee, Malta’s National Insect, this honey is truly unique. A portion of the proceeds supports the conservation of this endemic subspecies, ensuring its protection for future generations. The Foundation for the Maltese Honey Bee, the driving force behind its National Insect recognition, continues to advocate for sustainable apiculture and the preservation of Malta’s environment and heritage.”
A portion of the proceeds from honey sales will be reinvested into the Foundation’s ongoing conservation efforts, creating a direct link between consumer purchases and the preservation of the Maltese Honey Bee. This partnership is a significant step towards safeguarding the future of Malta’s natural heritage.
An Invitation to Beekeepers
As part of this initiative, the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is inviting all local beekeepers who rear the Maltese Honey Bee to join the project and contribute to its success. Beekeepers are encouraged to submit evidence of the origins of their honey bees, including any available documentation or testing that can confirm their honey comes from the Maltese Honey Bee. This could include genetic testing, hive records, or other verifiable evidence of the authenticity of their colonies.
By joining this initiative, beekeepers not only contribute to the preservation of a species that is vital to Malta’s biodiversity but also gain access to a premium market for their honey, supported by a dedicated conservation programme. This collaboration offers an exciting opportunity for Malta’s beekeepers to be part of something meaningful and impactful, helping to secure the future of the Maltese Honey Bee while benefiting from the growing demand for authentic, locally sourced products.
