Just Released: Maltese Summer Honey – The Second in the Katerina Trilogy

A golden new chapter in Malta’s honey (Għasel ta’ Malta) story has just been written. The Maltese Summer Honey, the second in the Katerina Maltese Honey Trilogy, has officially been released, a tribute to the warmth, energy, and colour of the Maltese summer. Following the success of the Maltese Spring Honey launched a few months ago, this new limited-edition honey celebrates the island’s vibrant biodiversity, apicultural tradition, and the enduring spirit of the endemic Maltese Honey Bee.

Inspired by the joyful song Festin Għad-Dakkara, Maltese Summer Honey captures the essence of Malta in full bloom. Harvested between July and August, it reflects the strength and resilience of Apis mellifera ruttneri, the Maltese Honey Bee, found only on our islands and officially recognised as Malta’s National Insect.

This seasonal honey is amber in colour, with a thick, velvety texture and a rich, aromatic flavour. Its main floral source is the Mediterranean Thyme (Thymbra capitata), one of Malta’s most prized wild plants and a hallmark of Maltese apiculture. The result is a full-bodied honey with an intense, herbal aroma and a lingering sweetness that evokes the island’s sunlit hillsides. It’s perfect for drizzling over cheese, spreading on toast, or savouring straight from the spoon.

Each 100g jar is elegantly presented in a custom-designed collector’s box, inspired by the vivid visuals of Festin Għad-Dakkara. The design bursts with movement, music, and summer hues, perfectly capturing the rhythm and vitality of the season. Every box includes a QR code linking to the full Katerina music trilogy, offering families, educators, and honey lovers an immersive journey through music, taste, and nature.

Produced exclusively by the endemic Maltese Honey Bee, this honey is not just a culinary treasure but also a contribution to conservation. Proceeds from each jar support the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee, funding research, school programmes, and awareness campaigns aimed at protecting this vital species from hybridisation and habitat loss.

The Katerina trilogy of honeys celebrates Malta’s changing seasons through three artisanal varieties:

• Spring Honey – In-Naħla Katerin
• Summer Honey – Festin Għad-Dakkara
• Autumn Honey – In-Naħla u Sħabha

With the Spring and Summer editions now released, anticipation is building for the final Autumn Honey.
