The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee, in collaboration with Is-Suq tal-Belt (L-Artiġjan), is proud to announce that the long-awaited Premium Maltese Honey has officially been launched and is now available for purchase at Is-Suq tal-Belt in Valletta!

First announced last April, this product marks a significant milestone in the effort to safeguard Malta’s endemic honey bee, Apis mellifera ruttneri. Produced entirely by the Maltese Honey Bee from the rich flora of Malta, this honey is not only a unique culinary treasure but also a vital step in protecting the island’s natural heritage.

What makes this honey truly special is its direct connection to conservation. Each jar purchased supports local beekeepers who are committed to rearing only the Maltese Honey Bee, discouraging the importation of foreign subspecies that pose a serious risk of hybridisation. By offering fairer prices for this authentic honey, the initiative provides beekeepers with a sustainable financial incentive to protect Malta’s National Insect. A portion of the proceeds from sales is also reinvested directly into the Foundation’s ongoing conservation projects, ensuring that every purchase contributes to safeguarding the Maltese Honey Bee for future generations.

This premium product is the first in Malta to be produced under strict conditions similar to a Protected Designation of Origin, guaranteeing that it comes solely from the endemic bee subspecies and the unique environment of the Maltese Islands. The result is a honey that not only reflects the flavour of Malta’s flora but also carries the story of resilience and protection of a species found nowhere else in the world.
