Last Monday, the Foundation was invited by Reġjun Tramuntana to deliver a presentation at its offices in St. Paul’s Bay. The session formed part of the EU-funded project ‘Deep Blue-Green Exercise for Wellbeing,’ which brings together partners from Malta, Greece, Italy, and Portugal.
During the one-hour session, the international contingent from Italy took part in a blend of presentations, videos, and interactive activities highlighting Malta’s rich beekeeping traditions, the importance of the Maltese honey bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), and the challenges it faces, which are also universal to challenges faced by regional honey bees worldwide.

The project Deep Blue-Green Exercise for Wellbeing promotes healthy lifestyles and well-being through outdoor activities in nature, incorporating transnational experiences from each participating country to share best practices and strengthen cultural and environmental connections. It builds upon the previous ‘Blue-Green Exercise’ initiative and focuses on three key pillars: raising awareness, facilitating inclusive access to sports and nature-based activities, and promoting a holistic approach to food, health, and well-being. Activities across partner countries combine exercise, enjoyment, and ecopsychology to strengthen people’s connection with nature and support both mental and physical health.
The Foundation extends its sincere thanks to Reġjun Tramuntana for this opportunity to raise awareness about conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee and the protection of Malta’s natural heritage, to an international audience!
