The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is proud to announce a historic milestone in its ongoing awareness campaign: the Local Council of Santa Luċija is the first in Malta to name a street after the island’s endemic honey bee, Apis mellifera ruttneri. This meaningful step reflects the locality’s commitment to conservation and environmental awareness, and we warmly commend the Council for its leadership. Foundation had encouraged Local Councils to name streets and gardens after the Maltese Honey Bee e.g. ‘Triq In-Naħla Maltija’ (Maltese Honey Bee Street), ‘Ġnien L-Insett Nazzjonali’ (National Insect Garden). This initiative aims to embed the significance of the honey bee into the very fabric of everyday life, serving as a lasting reminder of its vital ecological contribution.
The newly designated Triq In-Naħla Maltija (Maltese Honey Bee Street) pays tribute to the crucial role this native pollinator plays in Malta’s biodiversity and cultural heritage. Santa Luċija’s decision reflects both civic pride and environmental consciousness. It sets a strong example for other localities to follow, showcasing how communities can take tangible steps to celebrate and protect the island’s unique biodiversity. With this simple yet powerful gesture, Santa Luċija has made conservation visible and present within the urban landscape.
This initiative also taps into the linguistic and cultural roots of Malta itself. The country’s name is believed to derive from the ancient word for honey, meli, melite, melita – making Triq In-Naħla Maltija a fitting and symbolic recognition of that deep connection between the Maltese people and their native honey bee.
As outlined in Subsidiary Legislation 363.10, the process of naming or renaming streets requires Local Councils to submit recommendations to the Minister responsible for the Electoral Office, with further input from the Street Naming Committee. Santa Luċija’s successful completion of this process demonstrates how local governance and national conservation efforts can work hand in hand.
