The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is pleased to announce that, for the second consecutive year, it has secured funding from the Small Initiatives Support Scheme (SIS), managed by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) and supported by the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector (MIV).

Building on the success of our earlier video, Unique Insect: The Maltese Honey Bee, which targeted beekeepers, academics, researchers, and the general public, our next project will engage a younger audience: children in kindergarten and early primary schools! Starting in March 2025, we will create three new videos:
- one focusing on the importance of the Maltese Honey Bee,
- another on Malta’s National Species; these include the Mediterranean killifish, Blue Rock-thrush, Maltese Rock-centaury, Maltese freshwater crab, and the Sandarac gum tree. The Maltese Honey Bee is a candidate to become the National Insect of Malta, an initiative led by our Foundation!
- another song on Pollinators.
Featuring original songs, a cartoon-style bee character, and vibrant visuals, the videos are designed to captivate young audiences. With support for promotion and distribution across social media and schools in Malta and Gozo, we aim to reach a wide audience and inspire a lasting appreciation for the Maltese Honey Bee and local biodiversity.
Given the Maltese Honey Bee’s risk of extinction, we believe it is essential to educate children early and foster an appreciation for this unique insect. The videos will not only introduce children and educators to Malta’s rich biodiversity but will also enhance Maltese language skills through singing, making the learning process both enjoyable and interactive. By nurturing this understanding from a young age, we hope that some children may eventually become beekeepers or influence their families to rear the local honey bee, rather than importing foreign breeds — a practice that has contributed to the decline of our native bee. Through these engaging educational videos, we aim to foster a sense of responsibility in children and young people towards environmental conservation. This early awareness will empower future generations to make informed decisions and contribute to the protection of Malta’s fragile biodiversity.
