Following the strong success of its previous first, second and third editions, the Foundation has proudly launched the fourth edition of its Introduction to Beekeeping and Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee. Delivered in a flexible hybrid format, the course continues to respond to modern lifestyle demands while maintaining high-quality engagement.

This pioneering programme remains the first in Malta to combine practical beekeeping with a dedicated focus on conserving the endemic Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri) and promoting environmentally sustainable practices. Designed for aspiring beekeepers, educators, conservationists, and nature lovers alike, the course goes beyond traditional hive management by highlighting the critical role of native pollinators in supporting biodiversity.

Led by Foundation co-founder and administrator Dylan Farrugia and Foundation collaborator and Custodian of the National Insect Jorge Spiteri, participants have explored key topics including bee biology, behaviour, and the ecological importance of safeguarding Malta’s unique subspecies. The course also addresses the legal and ethical responsibilities tied to beekeeping, encouraging participants to act as responsible stewards of the environment.

A strong emphasis on practical learning remains a cornerstone of the programme. Participants have engaged in hands-on apiary sessions, gaining direct experience in hive inspections, colony management, and sustainable honey harvesting under expert supervision. This applied approach reinforces both technical skills and ecological awareness.
As the course draws to its end in June, participants are not only equipped with essential beekeeping knowledge but are also empowered to contribute actively to conservation efforts.
