Honey, a natural treasure cherished worldwide, faces an increasing problem: fraud. Counterfeiters mix genuine honey with syrups or other substances, making it challenging for consumers and even experts to identify authentic honey. However, thanks to groundbreaking technology developed by the Estonian research company Celvia, a new solution is transforming the honey industry.

The Honey Metagenomic DNA Analysis (MDA) test uses advanced DNA technology to uncover everything about honey’s origins, composition, and quality. It’s a game-changer not just for beekeepers but for consumers, exporters, and anyone who values genuine, high-quality honey.

Why Do We Need DNA Testing for Honey?

Honey is one of the most frequently adulterated foods globally. Fraudsters even advertise techniques to bypass traditional tests, such as adding syrups that cheat European food lab standards. Traditional methods, like chemical testing, only reveal specific details, such as the presence of extra sugars.

The MDA test is different. It examines the DNA in honey, offering a detailed breakdown of what’s inside. It not only identifies the plants from which the honeybees collected nectar and pollen but also checks the health of the bees and the presence of parasites or pathogens. This comprehensive insight is impossible to fake, making the MDA test a powerful tool in the fight against honey fraud.

How Does the MDA Test Work?

The process begins with just 100 grams of honey, which is sent to Celvia’s lab in Tartu, Estonia. The honey’s DNA is then analysed to produce a detailed report in two parts:

  1. PDF Summary: This document confirms whether the honey is authentic and lists the plants and potential pathogens it contains.
  2. Interactive Graph: Known as a Krona plot, this visual tool lets users explore the botanical diversity in their honey in an engaging and easy-to-understand way.

Customers receive their results in just a few weeks, giving them a clear picture of their honey’s quality and origins.

Benefits for Beekeepers and Honey Lovers

The MDA test is not just for large producers or exporters; hobbyist beekeepers and small-scale honey enthusiasts can also benefit. For example, beekeepers can use the test to learn which plants their bees frequent, identify health issues like parasites or pathogens, and make informed decisions to improve hive conditions.

For exporters, like those sending honey to countries such as Japan, where quality standards are exceptionally high, the MDA test provides proof of authenticity. This reassures buyers and ensures that only genuine, high-quality honey reaches consumers.

The Impact on the Honey Market

The MDA test has already sent shockwaves through the European honey market. In recent tests, Celvia found that up to 80% of honey samples in some markets, including Germany, Finland, and Austria, failed authenticity checks. This highlights the scale of the issue and the urgent need for reliable testing methods like the MDA test.

Celvia’s ultimate goal is to create a comprehensive database of authentic honey samples from across Europe, using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse and classify new samples. Over time, this will set a new standard for honey testing, ensuring that consumers can trust the products they buy.
