The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is excited to announce its recent affiliation with the European Beekeeping Association (EBA). Established on 10th February 2024, the EBA is a newly formed, pan-European organisation committed to tackling the challenges faced by the beekeeping community across Europe and promoting the health and conservation of bee populations. This affiliation marks a significant step for the Foundation in its ongoing efforts to protect and conserve the Maltese Honey Bee, an important endemic species.

The EBA has set out three primary goals to support beekeepers and protect bees:

  1. Combatting counterfeit honey: The influx of fake honey flooding the European market poses a serious threat to both the livelihood of beekeepers and the integrity of honey products. The EBA aims to tackle this issue by advocating for stronger regulation and enforcement to protect genuine honey producers.
  2. Promoting subsidies per beehive: Bees play a critical role in the pollination of both cultivated crops and wild plants, making them essential to ecological health and agricultural sustainability. The EBA is pushing for the introduction of special subsidies per beehive, recognising the immense ecological contribution of bees and supporting the livelihoods of beekeepers.
  3. Fighting against harmful pesticides: The improper use of pesticides, which are toxic to bees, has led to a decline in bee populations and threatens biodiversity. The EBA is committed to advocating for stricter regulations and better practices to reduce the harmful impact of pesticides on bees.

The Foundation believes that its membership in the EBA will strengthen efforts to protect the Maltese Honey Bee, a subspecies that contributes significantly to the biodiversity of the Maltese archipelago. Through collaboration with like-minded organisations, the Foundation hopes to support broader conservation initiatives, ensuring that endemic ecotypes continue to thrive across Europe and play their essential role in maintaining ecological balance and food security.
