Foundation’s Nominee Selected for Role in European Beekeeping Association’s Policy Working Group

The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is proud to announce that its nominee, Dr David Chetcuti Dimech, has been selected to join the European Beekeeping Association’s Working Group on European Beekeeping Policy and Legislation.

The working group was established following a Europe-wide call for experts aimed at strengthening the European Beekeeping Association’s capacity to monitor legislation and actively shape policies affecting beekeepers across the continent. Dr Chetcuti Dimech’s appointment ensures that Malta, the Foundation and the interests of the endemic Maltese honey bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), will be represented in these important discussions. The Foundation has since joining EBA in 2024 advocating on a European level for the conservation of native honey bees, culminating in the creation of a

Noteworthy is that through Dr Chetcuti Dimech efforts‘, in collaboration with the University of Malta and the Foundation, formed the legal basis for the recognition of the Maltese honey bee as Malta’s National Insect. This milestone significantly strengthened the subspecies’ legal visibility and conservation standing at a national level.

His appointment marks an important step for the Foundation, enabling it to contribute more directly to European-level policymaking and advocacy. It also reinforces ongoing efforts to ensure that the protection of Apis mellifera ruttneri is recognised within broader discussions on biodiversity, sustainability, and agricultural policy.

The Foundation congratulates Dr Chetcuti Dimech on this achievement and takes pride in its nominee representing both Malta and the Foundation within this European forum. We look forward to supporting his contribution to this important work.
