MaYA’s Organised Youth Delegation Shines on the Global Stage: Showcasing National Pride and Innovation

The Malta Youth in Agriculture Foundation (MaYA VO/0823) once again took the lead this year in coordinating a delegation of young apiculture enthusiasts, aged 11 to 17, to represent Malta on the international stage. The delegation featured three A-Level Biology students from Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School, selected to participate in the 13th International Meeting of Young Beekeepers (IMYB) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 18th to 22nd December 2024. Accompanying them were their mentor, Mr. Jorge Spiteri, and their educator, Ms. Maria Lourdes Attard, who played a key role in equipping the team with essential skills in honey bee product marketing and presentation delivery. Together, they represented the next generation of Maltese beekeepers.

As part of their preparation, the team produced a compelling video that showcased the National Insect Initiative, a campaign spearheaded by our Foundation. This initiative was instrumental in successfully achieving the official declaration of the Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri) as a National Species. The video highlighted the campaign’s milestones and celebrated Malta’s rich natural heritage, emphasising the importance of conserving this endemic species.

The IMYB brought together talented young beekeepers and aspiring enthusiasts from 20 countries across five continents to share knowledge, culture, and innovative ideas, all within a spirit of friendly competition. Supported by the dedicated efforts of Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School, the Maltese team excelled, securing the top award in the Country Competition for their engaging narratives about Maltese honey and their innovative solutions to the challenges faced by bees and beekeepers in arid regions. Individually, team members earned further recognition, achieving Gold and Bronze placements in mixed-team theoretical and practical assessments.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the IMYB experience offered invaluable opportunities for the students to enhance their marketing and packaging skills, fostering an entrepreneurial mindset as they explored creative ways to promote Maltese honey on the global stage. The event not only inspires innovation but also nurtures cross-cultural connections and helps participants realise their potential.

Adding to the team’s success was the support of cultural ambassador Tenor Joseph Calleja, whose encouragement and belief in Malta’s apicultural heritage contributed significantly to their achievements. This collective effort highlights Malta’s enduring legacy in apiculture and the promise of its young beekeeping community.
