The Foundation has launched an exciting new product that brings the beloved mascot Katerina even closer to children and families across Malta. The newly released Katerina NFC keychain combines education, technology, and fun in a simple and accessible way, allowing young audiences to enjoy the Katerina song trilogy wherever they go.
The keychain features the friendly face of Katerina on the front, while the back carries the inscription “Katerina”, reinforcing the mascot’s identity. What makes this item truly special is the built-in NFC (Near Field Communication) chip embedded inside it. When the keychain is touched against a mobile phone with NFC enabled, it automatically opens the YouTube playlist containing the full Katerina song trilogy: In-Naħla Katerina, Festin Għad-Dakkara, and In-Naħla u Sħabha.
These educational songs were created to introduce young children to the Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), while also teaching them about pollination, biodiversity, and the importance of protecting the natural environment. Through music, colourful visuals, and engaging storytelling, the trilogy has become a key part of the Foundation’s educational outreach.
Using the keychain is quick and straightforward. All that is required is to tap it against the back of a smartphone that supports NFC. If the link does not open immediately, users are advised to remove the mobile phone cover, as thick or metallic cases can reduce NFC sensitivity. Once proper contact is made, the playlist opens automatically, giving instant access to the songs.
The Katerina NFC keychain is available for €2, making it an affordable educational keepsake for families and supporters of the Foundation’s work. In addition, the keychain is given free of charge with every jar of honey purchased directly from the Foundation, strengthening the connection between local beekeeping, environmental awareness, and children’s education.
More than just a souvenir, the keychain represents the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness about the Maltese Honey Bee, encouraging environmental responsibility, and supporting local honey producers through creative and engaging educational tools. To further reinforce its environmental values, it is made from recycled materials.
