Pollinators Celebrating Love: The English Version of Festin Għad-Dakkara in the Making

A cartoon bee with big eyes and a backpack flying over a field of red poppy flowers, with a large red heart in the background and two other bees nearby.

Following the widespread enthusiasm for Festin Għad-Dakkara in Maltese, the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is excited to announce that an English version of the song, titled Pollinators Celebrating Love, is currently in development. This new adaptation, created by the same talented team behind the original, will bring Katerina the Honey Bee and her pollinator friends to an even wider audience, preserving the song’s playful spirit and educational value while making it accessible to children who speak or are learning English.

Pollinators Celebrating Love will continue the story of Katerina the Honey Bee, Malta’s beloved mascot for pollinator awareness. Abner Joe Buttigieg and Dylan Farrugia are coordinating the project, ensuring that both the Maltese and English songs maintain the same high standard of educational and creative excellence.

A Musical Celebration of Nature

Written by Rita Pace, composed by Augusto Cardinali, and performed by Christabelle Scerri, the English version will present pollination as a joyful and imaginative event, a “wedding” where flowers and pollinators come together in harmony. Children will be invited to sing along as Katerina the Honey Bee leads the festivities, helping young listeners understand the crucial roles played by bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, and other pollinators in maintaining healthy ecosystems. The song’s lively melody and playful lyrics will illustrate how pollinators work alongside nature, making science both entertaining and accessible for children.

Through this storytelling, young audiences will learn that without pollinators, plants would struggle to reproduce, and the fruits, seeds, and vegetables that sustain both humans and wildlife would not flourish. Framing pollination as a celebration of cooperation, Pollinators Celebrating Love encourages children to value these often-overlooked heroes of the natural world.

Pollinators Celebrating Love

Come on, we got work to do!
Katerina the Honey Bee too
is taking flowers on a date
and the couple just can’t wait!

There’s a wedding on, today
the beauty takes our breath away
To every flower we have been
Dressed in colour, a wedding scene!

And the good news is that you
can enjoy this party too
cause a wedding’s celebrated
when a flower’s pollinated!

The pollinators are waiting
And anticipating
Katerina the Honey Bee too
A wedding guest like me and you!
So we’re all invited
And we’re so excited
We’re hungry, there’s more than enough
For us when flowers fall in love!

Guess what? It’s a special flight
The groom is coming for his bride
Here’s the flower, he’s the one
And it’s only just begun

When the petals start to drop
the fruit starts to grow on top
So delicious, you can eat
Even humans get a treat

Please don’t take our flowers away
Leave for us a place to stay
Or where will we be celebrating?
What will we be pollinating?

The pollinators are waiting
And anticipating
Katerina the Honey Bee too
A wedding guest like me and you!
So we’re all invited
And we’re so excited
We’re hungry, there’s more than enough
For us when flowers fall in love!

Flies and wasps, mosquitoes here
Butterflies and birds appear
So much nectar we can share
Flowers smell good everywhere

A wedding celebration, for all of us to see
We are one big family
Everywhere is full of love
From the earth to skies above

The cycle of life and creation
Is built on this cooperation
Nature works beautifully
A lesson for you and me!

The pollinators are waiting
And anticipating
Katerina the Honey Bee too
A wedding guest like me and you!
So we’re all invited
And we’re so excited
We’re hungry, there’s more than enough
For us when flowers fall in love!
